New Delhi, June 13: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) will re-investigate around 75 cases of anti-Sikh riots in Delhi and some other States which is constituted by the centre.
Delhi had 237 anti-Sikh riot cases that were closed because the victims were not available and there was lack of evidence. After reviewing the documents, the SIT is looking forward reopening around 75 cases. The team will issue advertisements related to the cases and ask victims and witnesses to join the probe. The decision comes months ahead of the Assembly elections in Punjab.
A total of 3,325 people were killed in the anti Sikh massacre of 1984. Delhi alone witnessed 2,733 deaths while the rest were witnessed by Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and other States. The Home Ministry in the previous month announced that 1,020 riot-affected families will be given Rs. 2 lakh each under Centre-sponsored scheme.
