Pudukottai, June 16: Three fishermen from Pudukottai district in Tamil Nadu were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy early morning on Thursday.  The three fishermen were said to be fishing near the Delfts islands early morning. The Navy also detained one Indian fishing boat. Sri Lanka Navy said that they allegedly crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and fishing in Sri Lankan waters. The arrested fishermen along with the fishing trawler will be handed over to the Jaffna Fisheries Inspector for further actions, said the officials.
Jayalaithaa, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, earlier had spoken about this issue of fishermen to PM Narendra Modi during their meet that was held on Tuesday in New Delhi. Sri Lankan Navy had earlier arrested 21 fishermen from Rameswaram and Pudukottai. Local fishermen from Tamil Nadu are urging the government to secure the immediate release of 24 fellow fishermen and their 93 fishing boats from Sri Lanka.
