Pithoragarh, July 1: Death toll rises to 30 and missing 25 people from Singhali area in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand in which two persons were swept away by the muddy waters and debris rushing down the slopes into Siron village in Chamoli, while eight persons are killed in cloudburst. The cloudburst brought over 100 mm rains in two hours in a region of 50 sq km, affecting several villages.
Pithoragarh District Magistrate HC Semwal said, "We have recovered five bodies from Singhali area while three bodies have been recovered from Thal village. The search for others is on by rescue parties consisting of army and paramilitary personnel.”
According to sources, the cloudburst occurred in the villages of Singhali, Patthakot, Ogla and Thal villages. "The villages are buried under heavy debris and people are trapped. The rescuers are trying their best to locate and save them," Mr Rana said.
Meanwhile, expressing grief over the loss of lives in torrential rains in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Friday announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to families of the victims. “We are sad to know about the deaths. I am personally monitoring the situation from here and disaster management teams and security personnel had already been asked to reach the sites to carry out rescue works and ensure safety of locals.
