Shillong, July 13: In a major move to put an end to online crimes, the Meghalaya police has formed a cyber assistance cell to fix unethical elements and criminals who use various applications to cheat, harass, blackmail and perform other unwanted activities over the internet. The decision comes shortly after the creation of the Cyber police station at the Meghalaya Police headquarters in Shillong.Director General of Police (DGP) S.K Jain on Tuesday announced that the cell will be functional from Thursday, which will enable the public to use the helpline number and email ID provided in order to have police assistance formally and informally to resolve the menace of cyber crimes in the state, news agency North East Today reported.

According to news agencies, Jain also said that criminal activities are increasing in cyber space and in Meghalaya also inputs are coming about obscene calls and SMSs on mobile phones, online pornography, cyber stalking, abuse in cyber space, online defamation especially on social networking sites and social media platforms.

He further said that this would be a window to the victims by rendering necessary assistance and identity of the victims would be kept confidential as per the law of the land, whereby a case will be further perused by way of formal complaint at the concerned police station or at the cyber crime police station.

Altogether, 24 personals are involved in the cyber police station with adequate forensic lab for analyzing and investigating the various cases registered. The personnel in the station have acquired the skills and knowledge from within and outside the state to carry the task forward.
