New Delhi, July 20: Amid the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament, the Opposition parties today, created uproar in the Lok Sabha over reported atrocities on Dalits in Gujarat. The Congress party today forced repeated adjournments in the Rajya Sabha over the attacks on Dalits in Gujarat. The House has been adjourned till 2:30 PM. The agitating Congress members repeatedly trooped into the well of the House raising anti-government slogans. Responding to the Opposition concerns on the issue during zero hour in the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that the incident, which happened on 11th of this month, is unfortunate and condemnable. He said, the FIR was registered and nine accused were arrested in the case and four police officers were suspended.
Amid slogan-shouting, Social Justice Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot said the Gujarat government took timely action and registered FIR against those involved in the incident. The Minister also assured financial assistance to those injured in the violent incidents.
In his statement, Rajnath also said that the matter has been handed over to the CID for speedy investigation. He said that the State government is taking up the matter for setting up of a Special Court with the High Court for speedy trial of the case. The Home Minister stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed pain over the attack and also said that four lakh rupees have been announced as ex-gratia, out of which one lakh have been paid to victims.
The Home Minister also said, that as compared to the UPA regime, the number of atrocities against dalits has declined sharply. He said that atrocities against dalits are a social evil for which should be uprooted by joint efforts. Mallikarjun Kharge of Congress accused the BJP of vitiating the atmosphere in the state. He demanded visit of a Joint Parliamentary Team to the area to probe the matter. Later, the main opposition staged a walkout.
The incident at Una town in Gir-Somnath district, where Dalit youths were paraded and flogged for allegedly killing a cow, caused nation-wide outrage after its video went viral. The victims’ contention was that they were skinning a dead cow and had not killed it.
