Rameswaram, July 26: The Sri Lankan courts ordered the release of 73 Tamil Nadu fishermen, who were arrested for violating the International Maritime Boundary. They are among 77 fishermen detained by the Island nation. The remaining four will be released on Tuesday and in this week; they will be relived to their native places in India.
In the coming week, the formalities for the release will be completed said the officials. These fishermen are from the coastal districts of Ramanathapuram including Rameswaram Island, Pudukkottai and Nagapattinam.

The fishermen in Rameshwaram, had mechanised trawlers and called a strike, demanding immediate intervention by the Narendra Modi at the Centre and the Jayalalithaa government in the State to impress upon Colombo to release all the arrested fishermen. They also demanded the release of their 111 fishing boats which were seized by Sri Lankan government. These arrests were reported since May 31.

The release came into effect after the Indian High Commission in Colombo intervened in the issue. Despite the release of the fishermen, there is still no word on the release of their seized boats.
