Tamil Nadu, July 3: Five Indian fishermen were detained by Sri Lankan Navy and detained their fishing boat last night. The fishermen were fishing near Delfts island. Sri Lanka Navy assisted the Sri Lanka Coast Guard during the arrest.
The fishermen were said to be crossing the international maritime boundary line and reached the Delfts island. The fishermen were with Indian fishing trawler while trespassing the Delfts island. The Lankan Navy also detained one fishing boat and took them to Kankesanthurai. The Navy informed that arrested fishermen along with the fishing trawler will be handed over to the Jaffna Fisheries Inspector for onward action.
As a sign of friendly gesture, Sri Lanka generally releases the arrested fishermen, however, the fishing boats are detained. The security of the the immediate release of fellow fishermen and 94 detained fishing boats is asked by the local fishermen to the government for their safety purpose.
