Islamabad/New Delhi, Aug 3: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has arrived at Islamabad to participate in a two-day meeting of the SAARC Interior Ministers and Home Secretaries.

Earlier, Singh tweeted before leaving for Islamabad from New Delhi:

“Leaving for Islamabad to attend the SAARC HM Conference. This Conference provides a platform to discuss issues pertaining to security”.

Before leaving for Pakistan, Rajnath Singh said that this conference provides a platform for discussing issues pertaining to security in the region. He also said that he looks forward to underscoring the imperative of meaningful cooperation within the region against terrorism and organised crime.

The SAARC Interior/Home Ministers meeting is preceded by the 7th Meeting of the SAARC Interior/Home Secretaries being held in Islamabad today. Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi had already left for Islamabad yesterday and is leading the Indian delegation to the meeting today.

Rajnath’s Islamabad visit assumed much importance following the infiltration attempts by Pak-sponsored terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir and Indian response to their infiltration. Added to this was the open threat by the JuD Chief and most wanted terrorist of Pakistan Hafeez Saeed to Rajnath’s visit further vitiated the atmosphere prior to this conference.

The Government of India had raised security concerns following the threat by Hafeez Saeed to Rajnath Singh, and Pakistan government complied by agreeing to provide a multi-layered security to the visiting Indian Minister paving the way for Rajnath’s visit to India’s most cantankerous neighbour.
