New Delhi, August 4: Co director of ‘Peepli Live’ Mahmood Farooqui found guilty of raping an American woman on Thursday was sentenced seven years imprisonment. Delhi Court also ordered him to pay Rs.50000 as a penalty to victim and if he does not pay he will have be behind the bars for more three months.
The hearing of this case was completed on Tuesday in which Farooqui was found guilty. Lawyer of Delhi police asked court to give Farooqui maximum punishment as he had brought fall in reputation of country and said as he belongs from high society he should be responsible to keep himself more in manner.
The case relates to the March 28, 2015 rape of a 35-year-old American, a student at New York's Columbia University, who was in the Capital for research work on her doctoral thesis. During her deposition as a prosecution witness in the court, the woman alleged that Farooqui raped her and later apologised by several e-mails exchanged between them. Farooqui denied the allegations and said he was falsely implicated.
The police on June 19, 2015, lodged the FIR against Farooqui on the woman's complaint after which he was arrested. Victim also alleged that he was drunk at the time of incident. Farooqui, co-director of the 2010 satirical comedy Peepli (Live), and an exponent of the centuries’ old art of Urdu storytelling called Dastangoi.
