Heavy rainfall trigger landslide in Vaishnodevi; four pilgrims dead, nine injured

Katra, August 6: At least four pilgrims were dead and nine other pilgrims injured in landslide triggered by heavy rain on Saturday early morning near Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra near Ardhkuwari Temple, Katra (Jammu and Kashmir). The temple comes in the middle of the Vaishno Devi yatra.
According to sources, the incident occurred following heavy rainfall in the night causing flash floods situation in the area. 3 pilgrims were hit by a big stone that rolled down near gate number-3 of the cave Mata vaishno devi temple.

After the incident, Ajit Kumar Sahu, CEO, Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, said the landslide occurred after rainfall. He further said, "Our team went to the site as soon as the incident was reported to us." Sahu further said that they always try to ensure the safety of the pilgrims.

The injured have been admitted in SMVD hospital. Four of injured were relieved after first aid while condition of five injured is reported to be critical. Meanwhile, the track has been cleared of the debris and the pilgrimage is progressing smoothly.

A week ago, Amarnath Yatra was also suspended after the Jammu-Srinagar national highway got blocked following a landslide. Heavy rains usually result in landslides on roads leading to Bhawan in Mata Vaishno Devi Temple.
