Kochi, September 14: All the Malayalam clad around the world is geared up for Onam, a festival to celebrate the auspicious 10-day-long harvest festival of Kerala. The festival is celebrated by people of all religions in the Malayalam month of Chingam every year. The 10-day festival began with the royal parade, known as Atthachamayam, in Thripunithara, Kochi on Thursday.
Onam is celebrated which celebrates the home coming of Kerala’s King Mahabali a few years ago. The festival is celebrated by wearing traditional attires where women wear white saree with golden borders; men wear similar coloured shirt and mundu. Also, boat race (Vallam Kali), tiger dance (Pulikali), flower carpet (Pookkalam), Lord of Onam (Onathappan), Tug of War (Vadamvali), Thumbi Thullal, Kummati kali, Onam fight (Onathallu), Onavillu, Kazhchakkula and Onapottan are the prominent highlights of this auspiciousand colourful festival.
Ten days of Onam celebrations include Atham, Chithira, Chodhi, Vishakam, Anizham, Thriketa, Moolam, Pooradam, Uthradom, Thiruvonam. They also celebrate it by type of rangoli called Pookalam which decorated by flowers is laid from Atham till Thiruvonam. Also one of the most said meal is Sadya which is 30-65 vegetarian delicacies are prepared.
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has greeted the people, on the festival of Onam. “Onam wishes to you all. I pray that this special festival furthers the atmosphere of harmony and happiness across our nation.” the Prime Minister said. Also, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu tweeted saying, “May this auspicious festival of #Onam bring you joy, peace and prosperity. Happy Onam.”
