New Delhi, September 18: Alka Sirohi, former IAS and a member of Union Public Service Commission is appointed as Chairman, Union Public Service Commission on Saturday by President Pranab Mukherjee. The appointment will come to effect from the September 21.
Sirohi is has done remarkable work and has excelled continually during her long career. In Government of India, Alka Sirohi has served in the Department of Defence Production and subsequently as Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards, and as Additional Secretary in the Department of Consumer Affairs, where she was closely associated with the designing of a multi media campaign for consumer awareness titled 'Jago Grahak Jago'. She has been Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution in Government of India, and Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training, which charge she held till January, 2012. During this period, Alka was closely associated with the drafting of several anti corruption legislation.
The appointment is still further orders or till completion of her term as Member on January 03, 2017, whichever is earlier, read a government statement. The Chairman’s post will fall vacant on September 20 upon the superannuation of incumbent Deepak Gupta.
There was a speculation that Gupta might get an extension, however this was ruled out as the Government was worried because Deepak Gupta’s appointment as chairperson is under challenge in Delhi High Court. The UPSC consists of a chairman and ten members. The terms and conditions of service of chairman and members of the Commission are governed by the Union Public Service Commission (Members) Regulations, 1969. The regular Chairperson and other members of the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) are appointed by the President of India under article 316.
