Coimbatore, Sept 23: In a shocking incident, a Hindu Munnani spokesperson was hacked to death by four men at Subramaniyampalayam on Thursday night.
The incident led to tension in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts of Tamil Nadu on Friday morning.
Hindu Munnani state president Kadeswara Subramaniam has called for a state-wide bandh today.
The Times of India has reported that the 36-year-old C Sasikumar, hailing from Subramaniyampalayam in Coimbatore district, was on his way to home on a two-wheeler when the men chased him on bikes and attacked him with sickles. The assailants escaped after attacking Sasikumar.
Sasikumar, who suffered 11 cut injuries, was rushed to a private hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.
In the wake of the attack, shops in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts were shut today. Over 500 policemen were deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
On Monday night, another Hindu Munnani member was attacked with lethal weapons in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu.
As per Times of India report, a Hindu Munnani member in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu was admitted to hospital after a gang attacked him with lethal weapons on Monday night.
Police said the gang attacked Shankar Ganesh — an executive committee member of Hindu Munnani’s Dindigul unit — in front of his friend’s shop near the head post office.
The assailants had been waiting for him. They attacked him as he was walking towards the shop after parking his two-wheeler on the roadside. The gang members escaped after the attack.
Ganesh was rushed to Dindigul Government Hospital, from where he was referred to a private hospital in Madurai.
As the news of the attack spread, Hindu Munnani members thronged the Government Hospital and blocked roads. Some miscreants resorted to violence and pelted stones at government buses. Police said at least 12 buses were damaged.
The Dindigul town police registered a case and were investigating.
Incidentally, the attack was the second one on Monday night targeting a Hindu outfit member in Tamil Nadu after VHP Hosur unit secretary R Suri was hacked to death by a gang.
As per the report by The Hindu, four persons were arrested on Wednesday on the charge of attacking Hindu Munnani district executive committee member Sankar Ganesh here.
The arrested were Deepan Suresh Kumar (24), Mohammad Yasin (24), Jayakumar (25) and Sirajuddhin (28) of Selllandi Amman Temple Road area in Dindigul.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested and produced them before Judicial Magistrate Court II here, which remanded them to judicial custody till October 5.
They were lodged in Madurai Central Prison. The police were in search of two more accused in this connection.
