Patna, September 30: Bihar government notification was quashed by Patna High Court banning liquor in the state. It said that it is ultra virus to the Constitution. A division that was consisting Chief Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari and Justice Navaniti Prasad Singh repressed the April 5 notification of the state government to stop consumption and sale of alcohol in the state.
The Bihar Prohibition and Excise Bill -2016 was termed ‘illegal’ by the court which had provisions of strict punishment to prevent consumption of liquor. The Bihar government had recently given sops to private liquor manufacturing companies in the State while giving tax benefits to them. There are over a dozen liquor manufacturing companies in the State which could sell liquor only outside Bihar.
Just four days after prohibition on country-made liquor, the Bihar government extended its ban on IMFL brands ensuring a blanket ban on liquor in all towns and cities. On August 17, a hooch tragedy in the Gopalganj area of the state claimed 18 lives. The deaths happened after people consumed spurious country-made liquor which was being sold illegally.
