New Delhi, January 16: Today the Supreme Court gave a permit to the 22 year old woman who hails from Dombivli to terminate the foetus due to medical reasons. The reports said that the foetus does not have a skull and so the board of specialists recommended the decision of undergoing an abortion.
The Supreme Court gave a nod to abort a foetus which was 24 weeks old. It was the first time when Supreme Court gave such ruling. As the foetus was not having skull, its survival chances were zero. Hence the decision was recommended by the Bench of Justices S.A bode and L. Nageswara Rao after reviewing the report.
The Bench said that “We consider it appropriate and in the interest of justice, particularly the right of the petitioner to preserve her life by permitting her to undergo the termination of pregnancy under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act.” The bench suggested that the termination of pregnancy should be carried out by the team of doctors of the hospital and to maintain the records of the procedure of the matter.
The medical evidence clearly suggests that there is no point in allowing the petitioner to run in full course since the foetus would not be able to survive outside the uterus without a skull, the bench added.
