The three-member EC, headed by Nasim Zaidi, had reserved its judgement after hearing both sides on January 13. Today, it ruled in favour of Akhilesh after examining documents signed by party members advocating support to the young party leader.
The EC's decision has opened the platform for Congress party to fix the alliance with the Akhilesh camp for contesting the upcoming elections. It was senior Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal who represented Akhilesh before EC, which heard both the sides out on Friday.
According to media reports, Akhilesh, who is 43-years old, was considering using the 'motorcycle' symbol if the EC did not ruled in their favour. The motorcycle would have projected a modern and progressive avatar of the humble cycle.
A large number of enthusiastic supporters of Akhilesh assembled at his official residence after they came to know of the EC decision and raised pro-Akhilesh slogans.
