Pune, January 16: India registered a comprehensive win against England in the first One-Day International of the 3-match series at Pune on Sunday night. India easily chased down the target of 351 runs in 50 overs.
Earlier, India won the toss and England were invited to bat first. England taking up India’s bowlers posted a mammoth score of 350 for 7, their highest ODI score against India, courtesy half centuries by Joe Root, Jason Roy and Ben Stokes. Root top scored with 78, with the England scoring 115 runs in the last 10 overs.
But in reply, India got off to a poor start as they lost 4 wickets at the score of just 63. Later, Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav batted superbly and put on 200 runs for the fifth wicket as India scored 7-356 in 48.1 overs to seal the wonderful win by three wickets in the first one-day international against England in Pune.
Virat Kohli, in his first match as full-time India ODI captain, made 122 of 105 balls, his 27th ODI century, while Jadhav scored 120 of just 76 balls, his second century. At the end, Hardik Pandya made a well-played 40 as India overhauled the target with 11 balls to spare.
Jadhav was named a man of the match. The second one-dayer will be played on Thursday in Cuttack. The ODI series will be followed by 3 Twenty-20 matches.
