Sarawak, January 22: Indian shuttler, Saina Nehwal registered a comprehensive win against her opponent Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand on Sunday in the finals of Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold and clinched the title. Interestingly, Saina has won her first Grand prix title after a career-threatening injury for one year.
Saina, the top speed defeated Pornpawee Chochuwong in straight games by 22-20, 22-20. Sania and Pornpawee started off the game very aggressively and gave a tough fight to each other, But Saina holding her nerve strongly made a comeback at every crucial point which helped her winning this title. The match went upto 46 mins.
Both Saina and Pornpawee were meeting for the first time in the circuit and Saina was on the backfoot in the opening game when Chochuwong reeled off four consecutive points to grab the early initiative.
Chochuwong, in the first set maintained the advantage going forward and was placed 11-5 at the break. However, Saina narrowed the gap to make it 10-13 before drawing level at 19-19 and then saving a game point.
Pornpawee however, drew level at 8-8 and 11-11 but Saina did not allow her to clinch the momentum. Saina remained in the lead, before blowing away four match points to help Chochuwong draw level at 20-20. But Saina in the end manged to win the game easily.
Post undergoing a knee surgery in August, Saina was not able to perform well in previous matches and lost many. This win will definitely help Saina to gain the confidence to perform well in upcoming tournaments.
