Guwahati, Jan 6: In order to link the world’s largest river island Majuli and Barpeta to rail network Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has requested Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain to establish connectivity between Majuli and Barpeta region.
In an official letter to Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain Assam Chief Minister has asked for the establishment of rail network to portray the ethnic culture and various tourist spots in the Majuli region.
“Linking Majuli and Barpeta, the epicentres of Vaishnavite culture, to railways has been a priority of the present state government ever since it came to power, said Sonowal”
Pointing out the problem of connectivity Sonowal said that due to insufficient facilities many domestic and international tourists have failed to reach out to the desired spot. In order to mitigate the problem of connectivity Sonowal has requested Rajen Gohian to speed up the proposed working by removing all the administrative hurdles project to bring Majuli and Barpeta into railway map.
Sarbananda Sonowal who represents the Majuli constituency in state assembly He had requested Gohain to lay railway lines connecting Sorbhog-Abhyapuri, Barpeta Satra-Sarthebari Na Satra-Hajo for linking Barpeta and Gogamukh-Dhakuakhana (Sadar)-Kamalabari-Garmur for linking Majuli on a priority basis.
Majuli is the most important seat of Vaishnavite sattriya culture, Barpeta in lower Assam also finds equal importance in the spread and development of sattriya culture propagated by the 16th century saint-reformer Srimanta Sankaradeva. , Majuli was declared as a district in September last year. Right now the only mode of transport to Majuli is by waterways.
