North-east region to become epicentre for South East Asian countries : Assam Chief Minister

Bengaluru, Jan 9: Calling state of Assam as the gateway for the economies of South East Asian countries Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that Assam is rapidly emerging as a strategic base for foreign and domestic investors.He was speaking at the Chief Ministers’ session at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

Informing about the various initiative taken by state government Sonowal said that the state is going through massive transformation in every sector from infrastructure to reforms in land policy, investment, good governance, connectivity, social security and welfare. 

Announcing a unique initiative on the lines of act east policy chief minister stated that government is planning to set up an Act East department to explore the vast opportunities lying across the border in the international neighbourhood, and also to strengthen the business, communication, investment and cultural relations with focus on definite timeframe for implementation.

Speaking about Assam’s unique geographical advantage in the age of regional economic cooperation Sonowal said, “Future growth of the country can come through the Northeast.” He urged all NRIs across the globe to join hands with Assam government for growth of the state, for driving the growth engines of not just the country, but also for the whole of Asia.

Commenting on the various infrastructure projects Sonwal asserted that the state of Assam has a very promising and investor-friendly environment. Assam is connected to all major cities of the country through east-west corridor, air and rail network he added.

Briefing about the inland water ways for transport Sonwal said, “The waterway no. 1 through river Brahmaputra provides access to sea ports of Kolkata and Bangladesh.” He also insured that the proposed Trans Asian Railway and Trans Asian Highway would strengthen the connectivity with most of the countries in BIMSTEC and ASEAN.

Advocating the business friendly environment in the state Sonwal said that   the rich rich heritage of oil and tea industry of the State can contribute in the process of making develop Guwahati as a business hub.
