Dehradun, October 23: With an aim to protect cow smuggling and cow slaughter in the state, the two special protection teams named as “govansh sangrakshan squads” has been formed on Sunday. Notably, the formation of two “govansh sangrakshan squads” came following the directions of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat.

The two “govansh sangrakshan squads” have been formed one each for Kumaon and Garhwal regions comprising of 11 police personnel each. The “govansh sangrakshan squads” will keep a check over cow-smuggling and undertake the necessary investigation on cow slaughter.

An 11-member cow protection squad for the Kumaon region would have its headquarters in Udham Singh Nagar district, while the 11-member squad for Garhwal would have its headquarters in Hardwar district.

Earlier, Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat on Saturday night directed the formation of two special protection teams named as “govansh sangrakshan squads”. He also directed DIGs to form a list of illegal slaughterhouses in the 13 districts and to take “appropriate actions” against them.

“Reports on illegal slaughterhouses and cases of illegal transportation of cows would be submitted to the police headquarters in Dehradun by the 5th of each month,” the Uttarakhand CM ordered. The Uttarakhand Assembly had, in July, passed a bill banning cow slaughter in the state.
