Manila, November 14: The Rohingya issue which is bothering Myanmar for a long time has attracted heavy western criticism of state counselor Aung San Suu Kyi. Suu Kyi urged international community earlier also to not judge Myanmar without knowing inside situation. Now she has assured other Southeast Asian nations that it is attending the issue carefully.

A memorandum was signed on October 24 between Myanmar and Bangladesh to deal the issue properly. The plans for the return of Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh were also discussed between Myanmar’s Home Affairs Minister Lieutenant General Kyaw Swe and Bangladesh’s Home Secretary Mostafa Kamal Uddin. Referring to the MoU, Suu Kyi assured the repatriation of the displaced people would begin within three weeks.

“Asean expressed concern for the Rohingya people. Myanmar responded by saying that the repatriation of the IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) will begin in three weeks after Myanmar signs a Memorandum of Understanding with Bangladesh,” said Philippine’s Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque.

Harry Rouque also mentioned that at least two ASEAN leaders brought up the Rohingya issue Monday during a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Manila. The Myanmar leader also assured that the government is implementing the recommendations of a commission led by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Anna.
