Harare, November 22: Finally the slogans “Mugabe, must go!” has become true bringing smile to thousands of common citizens, army, and war veterans in Zimbabwe. Avoiding the impeachment in last moment which started already in Zimbabwe parliament, the 37 years ruler of the country former President Robert Mugabe has resigned on Tuesday. The speaker of parliament read out a letter from Mugabe which said he stepped down voluntarily.
“..I, Robert Gabriel Mugabe, in terms of Section 96, Sub-Section 1 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, hereby formally tender my resignation as the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe with immediate effect. My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arising from my concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe. And my desire is to ensure a smooth, peaceful and non-violent transfer of power that underpins national security, peace, and stability.”
Mugabe’s journey is like from hero to villain caused by an overreaching ambition of Grace Mugabe, the power-hungry mentality of him. All the goods he did for the country will be forgotten because of his corruption, dictatorship attempts to suppress opposition by any means. He is a freedom fighter who took out Zimbabwe from colonial rule and at the beginning of his rile he was praised by leaders from all over the world. Ironically, leaders also welcomed his resignation happily.
Celebration in Zimbabwe:
While Zimbabwe was once a promising economy almost reached its ruin during his rule. People of the country almost became sure that he was not going to resign until his death. But suddenly his decisions to fire his deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa lead him to the climax of this tragedy. Photos of local newspaper show the lawmakers, MPs of Parliaments became overwhelmed when the letter was read. In streets people started dancing, singing. Thousands of people gathered outside Parliament calling on Robert Mugabe to resign during the impeachment process.
