Leaders of different political parties and MPs will pay floral tributes to the martyrs at the plaque in Parliament House. President Ram Nath Kovind remembered the martyrs of the Parliament attack. In a tweet, Kovind said, forces of hate and terror targeted India's democracy and democratic values that Indians cherish the most. He said, they did not succeed and India will never let them succeed.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh also took to twitter and said the nation salutes the exemplary valour and courage of those martyrs who sacrificed their lives protecting the Temple of India’s Democracy.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley too paid respectful tribute to the martyrs.
Several other leaders former PM Manmohan Singh, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, veteran BJP leader LK Advani, cabinet ministers Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Niramala Sitharaman, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha PJ Kurien, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma, were all present at the ceremony to pay their homage.
On this day 16 years ago, 5 heavily-armed terrorists belonging to the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), had stormed into the Parliament in New Delhi. About 100 members of parliament were present in the building during the horrific incident.
Two persons from the Parliament Security Service of the Rajya Sabha, five Delhi Police Personnel and a woman constable of the Central Reserve Police Force, laid down their lives while preventing entry of terrorists inside the Building. A gardener of the CPWD also lost his life in the attack on the temple of democracy.
