Hike in Help: Tamil Nadu Govt gives Rs 20 lakhs Compensation for the fishermen killed by cyclone ‘Ockhi’

Kanyakumari, December 13: One of the worst cyclones causing a great damage to southern parts of India has killed many and still many are missing. Taking the aftermath into consideration, Tamil Nadu government has extended its hands for its people. Tamil Nadu CM K Palaniswami has announced Rs 20 lakh compensation for the kin of fishermen who died in the cyclone.

The emergency assistance of Rs 2,500 has also been doubled by the Chief Minister, who added that due compensation for the damaged boats and houses. He assured houses under the state government’s 'green house scheme' to those whose houses had been wrecked by the cyclone.

Tamil Nadu CM had recently visited the districts affected by the devasting cyclone. He has also assured jobs for one member from each family who had lost their kin in the cyclone. Palaniswami said that “Government is working very sincerely and with extreme care to help the affected fishermen in the district.”

 

Earlier, the government had declared a Rs ten lakh compensation to the bereaved families. The chief minister had ordered an assistance of Rs 50,000 to the injured fishermen who were undergoing treatment in hospitals.

Palaniswami had also directed a financial aid of Rs 5,000 to the families of missing fishermen and Rs 2,500 to fisherfolk of Kanyakumari district as they were unable to go for fishing in view of the cyclone.

 

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy had asked the Centre to declare the Cyclone Ockhi a ‘National Disaster.’

Further, promising to continue search and rescue operations until the last missing fishermen was found, Chief Minister added that the existing laws to declare the missing fishermen would be relaxed to the maximum so that their families could get due compensation in time. As per existing norms, an unfound fisherman would be declared dead only after seven years.
