London, December 14: Brexit event takes another new twist as British Prime Minister Theresa May has lost a key vote on Brexit Bill due to a rebellion by 11 MPs of her own party, Tory. The loss came just before an important meet of Brittan and the European Union in Brussels. She was defeated on an amendment to the European Union Withdrawal Bill over parliament’s right to a meaningful vote on the Brexit deal by four votes. The loss has again proved the huge conflict within Tory party on the issue of Brexit.

Though the supporters of a soft Brexit cheered the loss, some ministers from parliament said "minor setback" would not prevent the UK leaving the EU in 2019. A last-minute attempt to offer concessions to rebels could not prevent the backing of an amendment to the bill by 309 votes against 305 in favor of May government.

“We are as clear as ever that this bill, and the powers within it, are essential. This amendment does not prevent us from preparing our statute book for exit day. We will now determine whether further changes are needed to the Bill to ensure it fulfills its vital purpose,” a government spokesperson said.

The eight Tory MPs of the group who voted against May was former ministers. One of them said, he put country and constituency before the party and voted with his principles to give Parliament a meaningful vote. Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the defeat was "a humiliating loss of authority". Some Ministers said this is bad for Brexit though it may not affect the big picture.

The government said: "We are disappointed that Parliament has voted for this amendment despite the strong assurances that we have set out.” On the other hand, European Parliament's chief Brexit co-ordinator Guy Verhofstadt said British Parliament has taken back control. European and British Parliament together will decide on the final agreement.
