Washington, December 4: After Paris climate accord the US pulls out of another international pact. The US has informed the United Nations that it will no longer participate in the Global Compact on Migration citing the reason that the program was not consistent with American immigration policies.
US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley mentioned that the approach of this process contradicts with the sovereignty of US. She also mentioned the US will instead define its own migration plan. The US should define alone immigration policies and control over its border.
"While we will continue to engage on a number of fronts at the United Nations, in this case, we simply cannot in good faith support a process that could undermine the sovereign right of the United States to enforce our immigration laws and secure our borders," U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said.
"The United States supports international cooperation on migration issues, but it is the primary responsibility of sovereign states to help ensure that migration is safe, orderly, and legal," he added.
The UN General Assembly president expressed his disappointment over the decision in a tweet. He says he regretted the US decision to disengage from the process leading to a UN global compact on migration.
This is the fourth international organization from which the US has withdrawn in last year. The list includes Paris Accord, Trans-Pacific Partnership, and UNESCO.
