Bhubaneswar, February 1: On Tuesday the Excise Department has issued a ban on purchase and sale of liquor during Panchayat polls in Odisha. The Excise Department will scrutinize the liquor business prior 2 days of Panchayat polls. The move has taken to restrict the influence the poll aspirants do on voters by offering alcohol.The Excise Commissioner Prasant Kumar Senapati said to all the district collectors that no purchase and sale of liquor will be allowed from two days prior to the polls till the day following the elections. Liquor sales will be prohibited in hotels, guest houses, eateries, and any other public and private places coming under the block or the Zilla Parishad zone. He also asked the district collectors to ensure a ban of purchase, sale and movement of excise commodities.
The poll aspirants offer alcohol to the voters in order to get maximum votes, hence the excise department announced to curb this corrupt way of influencing voters which misleads the polls.
Deputy Excise Commissner M K Daksh said that “there will be a ban on sale of all excise commodities from 48 hours ahead of the Panchayat elections till the following day. Our mobile squads are undertaking raids in various districts.” After the announcement the excise department will strictly keep an eye on the liquor business.
