Lucknow, February 14: On violation of Election Commission's model code of conduct implemented in Uttar Pradesh, Jagran.com's Editor Shekhar Tripathi was arrested this morning. Yesterday Election Commission has asked District Election Officers of 15 districts of Uttar Pradesh to lodge FIRs against the Managing Director and other authorities of Resource Development International, RDI and Hindi daily Dainik Jagran including its Managing Editor.
The EC said, the newspaper has published the result of exit polls conducted by RDI on the first phase of elections in the state, through their website. The Commission said the conduct and publication of exit polls amount to offense under Representation of Peoples Act as well as offense under Indian Penal Code. The offense also amounts to disobedience to Order duly promulgated by the Commission. The poll body has also sought compliance report from the Chief Electoral Officer of the state.
The Uttar Pradesh Police also raided the homes of Sukirti Gupta (CEO of Jagran New Media), Varun Sharma (Dy Editor, Jagran English Online) and Puja Sethi, Digital Head. The panel has banned exit polls till the last of the votes are cast to ensure that its results do not influence voters. Election Commission has barred political parties and candidates in Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand assembly polls from publishing an advertisement in newspapers tomorrow and on polling day without its prior approval.
So far, assembly polls have been concluded in Goa and Punjab and the first phase of polling has been held in Uttar Pradesh. UP still has six more phases, while polls are also due in Uttarakhand and Manipur. The Indo-Nepal border points in Nepal's Kanchanpur district will remain closed during polls in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The decision has been taken to avert any untoward incident during the polls in these two states on Wednesday.
