Kohima, February 20: Naga People’s Front (NPF) Chief Shurhozelie Liezietsu elected as the new Chief Minister by Democratic Alliance of Nagaland DAN.  After former Chief Minister, T R Zeliang resigned from the post on Sunday due to the pressure from tribal organisations for deciding to hold civic body polls with 33% quota for women.

The 81-year old Liezeitsu takes over the post of former Chief Minister T R Zeliang. The agitating tribal bodies gave a deadline to Chief Minister TR Zeliang to step down following the government's decision to hold local bodies’ elections with 33% reservation for women and the death of two persons in clashes between the police and protestors. According to protestors, it is against the local culture and tradition for women to participate in politics.

The move to appoint Liezietsu as the new Chief Minister of Nagaland will help restore normalcy in the State and avoid the possibility of President’s rule in the State. Liezietsu is expected to meet governor PB Acharya soon for the formality.

Former Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio was likely to succeed and was also being considered as a front-runner for the Chief Ministership. But Liezietsu took over on the demands of people and set to rule as Chief Minister.

On Thursday evening during a press conference Minister for Parliamentary Affair, Kiyaneilie Peseyie said that "Shurhozelie has accepted the offer of the legislators to head the NPF-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) government and restore normalcy, preventing the imposition of President's rule in the state. We are sure that there will be smooth transition of power as the Chief Minister himself wants to ensure peace in the state after weeks of agitation.”
