New Delhi, February 3: BJP MP Swapan Dasgupta was bullied today by the Trinamul Congress MPs when he legitimately asked about the suppression of religious freedom and raised the issue of banning Saraswati Puja at Tehatta public school and brutal attack of WB Police on school children protesting aganst govt decision to close the school and favoring Muslim radicals' intimidation.
West Bengal Police thrash the peacefully protesting Tehatta High School students who were on roads to raise their voice against the traditional Saraswati Puja ban and closing their school indefinately. The issue came forth when some muslim radical elements provoked muslim students to demand for Nabi Diwas (Birth day of the Muslim Prophet Muhammed) just to counter traditional Saraswati Puja and disrupt the peaceful educational evironment in school.
The Muslim goons attacked the Head master who resigned from the duty after being insulted by Muslim goons. The West Bengal government favoured the radicals and allowed them to hoist islamic flag on the school and 'celebrate' Nabi Diwas which they celebrated in most clamourous manner.
After that the government told that there will be no Saraswati Puja and closed the school indefinately.
This issue was raised by Swapan Dasgupta in Rajya Sabha, today. When he was allowed by the Speaker to raise his point, immediately TMC MP Derek O'Brien objected saying that the RSS was trying to create polarisation. Other TMC MPs joined Derek and grouped around Swapan not allowing to speak.
"Sad that TMC tried to prevent me from raising the Saraswati Puja issue in RS. Religious freedom applies to all communities, including Hindus", Swapan said on twitter. After 65 years of continuous observance of Saraswati Puja, says Dasgupta, I think it's a matter of shame that restrictions have been placed on the media for trying to cover it. We seek religious freedom for all communities in the state. There were restrictions placed on immersion during Durga Pooja too.
The Tehatta High School is 64 years old and is aided by the government. Apparently, it has always celebrated Saraswati Puja. Meanwhile, a large numbers of students and parents on Tuesday held a counter protest demanding that the school be re-opened immediately. Police had to resort to lathi-charge and fire tear gas shells to disperse protesters who had blocked the NH-6 for hours. Students have also written a petition to the Uluberia police station seeking help to conduct Saraswati Puja at the school which they claim is being conducted for the past 65 years.
