New Delhi, Feb 8: Senior IPS officer Karnal Singh, has been appointed as the Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED) for a fixed tenure of two years by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), a press release by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions said.
Karnal Singh, who is a 1984 Union Territories cadre, was to retire in August this year.
He was appointed as the Director of ED in October 2016. However, due to an abnormality in his appointment, the Supreme Court had directed the ACC to set right the tenure of his appointment in compliance with the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) Act.
SC noted that the appointment of Singh, which ended in August 2017 with his retirement, was in violation with the section 25(d) of the CVC Act. The Act provided for a fixed tenure of the Director of ED at not less than two years.
Hence, following the apex court’s decision, ACC fixed his tenure for two years, which will be considered as commenced from the assumption of charge, that is, from October 2016.
