Ahmedabad, March 1: Renowned writer, humorist and playwright, Taarak Mehta passed away yesterday in the city at the age of 87. He is best known for his column, Duniya Ne UndhaChashma in Gujarati.
The popular show on Sab TV, Taarak Mehta ka OoltaChashma has been inspired by his column; the show began in 2008 and has attained flagship status since then, winning people’s hearts and carving a smile on their faces with light humour.
Mehta has to his credit around 80 published books. Three books are based on the columns he wrote in Gujarati newspaper DivyaBhaskar while rest were compiled from the stories in Taarak Mehta KaOoltahChashmah. His first humorous column appeared in Chitralekha in March 1971.
He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in 2015. He is survived by a daughter from his first marriage.
