Oslo, March 10: Norway is trying to mark itself as a destination for all things Viking. Thor’s Rike (Thor’s Kingdom) in western Norway aims to not only be Norway’s largest theme park when it opens; it wants to become the “Viking capital of the world.”The theme park will feature an array of roller coasters and carousels, along with “infotainment” so guests can learn about the history of the Viking warriors. Visitors will be able to eat like Vikings and even barter like Vikings at shops around the park.

Developers have revealed that the park will be broken up into several different sections, including a forest, a gigantic castle-fort, and a trip through the Norse underworld. Developers described Thor’s Rike as a “theme park in Viking costume.”

The park has been in development since 2014, but the opening has been delayed until 2019 or even 2020. The project is still seeking to fund and hopes to raise all money before the start of summer.

For those impatient to get a dose of Norwegian Viking culture, the Norwegian History Centre is not far off from the future site of Thor’s Rike. The museum sends visitors back in time to show how the Vikings lived. It’s often referred to as the “Viking Farm” and is open daily for immersive tours.
