Gurgaon, March 11 : A District Court in Manesar today convicted 31 employees of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL), including 13 on charges of murder, for the violence at the company'sManeser plant in August 2012. Additional District and Sessions Judge R K Goyal also acquitted 117 MSIL employees.
On 18 July 2012, workers had had a heated exchange with their supervisor over hiring of low-paid temporary employees. The argument soon turned bloody, and in it,Awanish Kumar Dev, an HR General Manager lost his life. The protesting workers had allegedly set a factory floor on fire. Subsequently, they were charged with conspiracy to commit murder, arson and rioting.
A total of 148 workers were arrested and charged with the murder of the senior HR officer of MSIL. The court hasnow sentenced 13 employees holding top posts in MSIL workers' union on charges of murder and attempt to murder besides rioting and other related offences. The other 18 were convicted on charges of rioting, trespassing, causing hurt and other related offences under Indian Penal Code sections.
The duration of punishment will be decided on March 18 during the next hearing, sources report. However, coming out in support of the accused, more than 25,000 workers across different plants expressed their solidarity by boycotting meals.
"The workers across the industrial belt are united and in one voice want the government to drop charges against those who have been framed wrongly,”KuldeepJanghu, General Secretary of the Maruti Suzuki Kamgar Union told sources.
The district administration has imposed CrPC section 144 near the civil court and Industrial Model Township (IMT) Manesar, to prohibit a gathering of more than five people. Assembly of more than five people has been prohibited in 500 metres radius of MSIL plant and Gurgaon court.
