New Delhi, March 12: Election Commission has rejected Mayawati's allegations of EVM tampering in UP assembly elections saying there is no merit in the allegations. The poll body also quoted court orders endorsing EVMs and said Mayawati's demand for probe is legally not tenable. In reply to BSP letter, the Commission said, it has been successfully using EVMs since 2000 in every election and has full confidence on their absolute credibility. The poll panel said the credibility of EVMs has also been successfully recognized by the courts on several occasions.
All the EVMs are made to go through tough scrutiny at several stages to ensure that they are in perfect working condition and are showing the right results. They are nothing more than an improved version of a calculator and cannot be tampered with, said a senior EC official.
Meanwhile, Mayawati had blamed the EVMs for the BSP’s poor showing and BJP`s historic victory. At a hurriedly called press conference in Lucknow she had challenged the BJP and the Election Commission to show courage and get fresh elections done with ballot papers.
“The EVMs should be sealed and examined by technical experts from a foreign country or else BJP will manage local experts. The use of EVMs should be stopped in future Lok Sabha, assembly and local bodies’ election also, else the ruling party will manipulate the results,” she said.
Mayawati said the BJP won the election in Muslim dominated areas of West UP and Rohilkhand. The Muslim voters have not supported the BJP then how come their vote has been transferred to BJP. Several Muslim community leaders expressed surprise over the massive victory of BJP candidates in their constituency, she added.
