Imphal, March 14: On Monday, Minister Nongthombam Biren who was once a former national football player was chosen as the Chief Minister candidate for Manipur. Former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh submitted his resignation papers to the Governor of Manipur Najma Heptulla to form a new government.Nongthombam Biren, was elected at the legislature party meeting on Monday under the supervision of Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar and Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal and Vinay Sahasrabuddhe. “After extensive consultations and discussion N Biren Singh has been elected unanimously as the leader of the party,” senior party leader and Union minister Piyush Goyal told journalists,” said Piyush Goyal.

Biren Singh thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP leadership for giving him an opportunity to serve Manipur. He said, his team under the leadership of the Prime Minister will provide good governance to the state. Earlier Biren Singh was a minister in the Congress government and quit the government and party in October last year. Also said that he left the Congress because of its misgovernance. The Congress had won 28 seats in Manipur, followed by the BJP 21. But now the Bharatiya Janata Party now has the support of 32 members in the 60-member Assembly.

Addressing the media Piyush Goyal said that “the BJP legislative party met in Imphal, where all 21 newly elected MLAs were present and after extensive consultation with BJP party president Amit Shahji, the name of N. Biren was proposed by Bishwajit Singh and seconded by Dr.Radheshyam Singh, Nemcha Kipgen and Vungzagin Valte. N.Biren has been unanimously elected the leader of the legislative party. He will be the first BJP chief minister of Manipur, we will shortly leave for Raj Bhavan to stake claim to form the government. We have an overwhelming majority with the support of several parties including the NPP, NPF and the LJP and several other MLAs.”

Hailing from Luwangsangbam Mamang Leikai in Imphal East, Biren has been representing Heingang constituency since 2002. He was elected for the first time on the ticket of Democratic Revolutionary People’s Party and later on joined the Congress. He became a journalist but then he resigned and in May 2003 he was appointed as the minister of state for vigilance. He retained his seat in 2007 elections and was given the charge of irrigation and flood control minister and youth affairs and sports. Though Biswajit Singh gave him tough competition in BJP seemed to pave a way for Biren to become CM of Manipur.
