Baghdad, March 15: Iraq’s Federal Police force on Tuesday announced that it had recaptured the 90 percent of central Mosul’s Old City from the Islamic State terrorist organization.
According to the statement given by Lt. Gen. Shaker Jawdat, Iraqi security forces retook 90 percent of central Mosul’s Old City which was a highly desired area in the fight against IS. He further said that the forces also recaptured the neighborhoods of Bab al-Bid and Bab al-Jadid. Hours later, forces also retook a railway station and garage in Nineveh as well. Troops have also regained control of the city’s airport, important government facilities, and a military base.
Jawat referencing one of five strategic bridges that connect eastern and western Mosul near the Tigris River said, "The Rapid Response forces recaptured 90 percent of the Old City and came 100 meters away from the Old Bridge." However, the forces have also regained control of the city’s airport, important government facilities, and a military base.
Another operation to retake the Iron Bridge bridge in Old City near the Tigris river resulted in the death of IS military commander Abu Abdul Rahman al-Ansary. This is thought to be a considerable blow to militants clinging to a former stronghold and self-imposed caliphate.
Meanwhile, Brigadier General Mahdi Abbas Abdullah of the Rapid Response force said, "We are still moving toward the Iron Bridge. We are taking out snipers hiding in the surrounding buildings, we are still pushing for the Iron Bridge."
Notably, Eastern Mosul was recaptured from the IS terrorist organization on January 24, after three months of intense battle. Another operation to retake the region was launched in February, resulting in 30 percent of Mosul being recaptured.
Interestingly, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the chief of Islamic Sates terrorist organization finally laid his head down and admitted his defeat in Iraq. As Iraqi forces killed thousands of terrorists related to IS, therefore, he ordered his men to either flee or kill themselves in suicide attacks.
Importantly, the pro-government forces of Iraq, US, Russia led forces have killed thousands of militants belonged to IS terrorist organizations due to which it has lost its strength. Therefore, IS has lost their holds in many cities, states etc.
