Chandigarh, March 16: Captain Amarinder Singh assumed the charge as the 26th Chief Minister of Punjab on Thursday. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy by the state Governor VP Singh Badnore at Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh.
With the oath of Captain Amarinder Singh who led the Congress to victory in the state brings the new era in Punjab. Congress national vice-president Rahul Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were prominent amongst those present at the swearing-in ceremony. Leaders of Punjab Congress and invitees were also present in large number.
Along with Captain Amarinder Singh, eight other ministers have also been inducted into the cabinet. They were also administered the oath of office and secrecy by the Governor VP Singh Badnore. The newly inducted ministers included Navjot Singh Sidhu, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sadhu Singh Dharmsot, Brahm Mohindra, Aruna Chaudhary, Razia Sultana, Manpreet Singh Badal and Charanjit Channi.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated Capt. Amarinder Singh via twitter and extended him best wishes in taking Punjab to the new height of development. He tweeted, "Congratulations @capt_amarinder on taking oath as CM. Wishing you the very best in working for Punjab's development.”
However, Captain Amarinder Singh said that they do not want to celebrate when the people of Punjab are suffering due to severe financial and other problems. Notably, Congress won 77 of Punjab's 117 seats, with the Aam Aadmi Party winning 20 and the Akali Dal BJP winning 15. Interestingly, this is the second time that Amarinder, 75, has become Chief Minister of the state. He earlier held the office from 2002 to 2007.
