Guwahati, March 27: The Assam Government will be taking a strict action against the illegal storage of liquor, transport and sale as non-bailable offence. They will see to it that the excise laws are strictly enacted.
“The excise department has already prepared a draft law in this regard, proposing eight major amendments and five new sections in the Assam Excise Act, 2000” said an official source
Assam Excise minister Parimal Sukla Baidya also said that his department will hand over the case of massive excise revenue loss case to the CID. SIT is investigating this matter as of now.Regarding the new law, the minister said that offenders used to go scot-free after paying a fine.
There was little that the department could do to prevent the violations and there was no fear among the bad elements.
He further said that if the offenders could be put behind bars, it would act as a deterrent. The minister said that traditional tribal drinks will be branded and sold as heritage drink soon.
