Islamabad, March 27: Pakistan has allegedly apprehended over 100 fishermen and seized around 18 boats, off the Gujarat coast yesterday. Notably, the Indian Coast Guard captured nine Pakistani nationals along with a fishing boat off Jakhau coast in Kutch on Friday.

A functionary of a fishermen association reports, the fishermen were apprehended by Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, near the international maritime boundary line, off Jakhau coast in the Kutch region. A functionary of the National Fishworkers' Forum said, they got the information from escaped fishermen.

At least 19 boats were also seized during the raid by the Maritime Security Agency (MSA). The 100 men would be taken to the court on Monday, senior police official Adeel Chandio said after the fishermen were handed over to the police by MSA officials.

Every year dozens of Indian and Pakistani fishermen are picked up in the Arabian Sea after straying across maritime borders. They often languish in prison even after serving their sentences, as poor diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries hamper their swift release.

Meanwhile, Pakistan released 219 Indian fishermen as a "goodwill" gesture in January. On March 4, 18 fishermen released from India had reached Karachi.
