Lucknow, March 3: The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday sent notice to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) over allegation of huge amounts of cash deposits during the demonetisation drive. EC asked the BSP to send details of cash deposits in party's bank accounts. The party has to submit its reply to the Poll body by 15th of this month.The Commission's order came in response to a writ petition, alleging the deposit of huge amounts in BSP's bank accounts in cash within a short period after the announcement of note ban on 8th of November last year.

EC said that BSP to send details of the contributions it received in cash and deposited in the party's bank accounts. The Poll Panel drew the attention of the party to its transparency guidelines which provide for due accounts of donation received in cash.

Earlier in December last year, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) detected cash deposits totalling over 104 crore in an account belonging to Mayawati-led party. Of total amount, 102 crore was deposited in  1,000 notes while the remaining amount was in the old  500 notes. The Enforcement Directorate also detected 1.43 crore in an account belonging to Mayawati's brother Anand Kumar.

Meanwhile, EC has also taken objection to the felicitation of sports persons from the North East by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, DONER, without its prior permission in violation of the model code of conduct.

The poll body said that it has come to its notice through media reports that the two Ministries felicitated nine sportspersons who had participated in the Rio Olympics from North-Eastern States.  Of them, five are from Manipur, which is going through elections. In a letter to the secretaries of the Ministries of DONER and Home, the commission has sought their reply by 3:00 PM tomorrow.
