Mumbai, March 5: In order to ensure affordable travel for commuters Maharashtra government decided to regulate web based taxi services.  This initiative to regulate the fare prices was taken to help common man so that he can afford the drives.Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said that Maharashtra City Taxi Regulations 2017 will be implemented in the state. Due to this decision; fares of web-based taxi services will be regularized. Apart from GPS/GPRS system in the vehicle and with the driver, there will be a display of the route and fare to be recovered for the same.

The government has also introduced a new ‘app-based taxi permit’ that would be mandatory for all app-based taxis. This move will help to bring transparency in the tariffs. He further said that as per the new regulation, the service provider will have to register in the city to operate the taxi service.  The government has also decided to paint all app-based cabs white, with a stripe of daffodil yellow.

These taxi services will have separate permits and will be air-conditioned. They will run on clean fuel. With the government making clean fuel vehicles mandatory, tourist taxis that run on diesel won’t be allowed to ply as app-based taxis. Sources in the government said they would be given a year’s time to switch to clean fuel. The black and yellow taxis can also upgrade to air-conditioned and register as app-based service.

For better safety, the government has put in place a 24x7 Control room, and made SMS alert facility and two-way communication systems mandatory. The rules also mandate police verification of drivers to find out if they have a criminal background.
