Lucknow, March 7: With the last phase of Assembly elections to go, the capital of Uttar Pradesh has witnessed a terror attack. According to reports, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has cornered a terrorist on Tuesday afternoon in Lucknow’s Thakurganj area.
As per the latest reports, shots were fired by suspected terrorist at the ATS team. The operation is underway. The suspect has been identified as Saifullah and he is believed to be from Madhya Pradesh. Tear gas is being used to flush out the suspect.
According to TOI, the terrorist was allegedly involved in Madhya Pradesh train blast near Khandwa. The train explosion happened on March 3 in the passenger train going to Ujjain from Bhopal left eight people injured.
The ATS squad has cordoned off the locality. As per the latest reports, shots were fired by suspected terrorist at the ATS team. The operation is underway. The suspect has been identified as Saifullah and he is believed to be from Madhya Pradesh. Tear gas is being used to flush out the suspect.
Based on “concrete” information from intelligence, the ATS had gone to apprehend Saiful from a house in Haji Colony of Thakurganj area when he suddenly opened fire on the team.
“The suspect inside the building is possibly from Lucknow, we suspect that he has weapons. We hope to arrest him soon, will interrogate him thereafter,” said a senior police official Daljit Chaudhary, to ANI.
The search for the suspected terrorist began around 3:30 pm after the UP ATS received a tip that some terrorists might be staying in a house in Haji Colony in Thakurganj.
Some three dozen policemen then started evacuating the houses in the neighbourhood. The suspect apparently started firing on the police, after which 10 elite commandos from the Bijnaur police facility were summoned to control the situation. The exchange of fire between the UP ATS and the suspected terrorist went on for over 30 minutes, reports said.
The ATS cordoned off the densely populated colony.
Eventually, the UP ATS cornered the suspected terrorist and was trying to flush him out from a building in Haji Colony where he had holed up.
A search operation is also underway in the area and residents of the neighbourhood have been told to stay indoors during the operation.
