New Delhi, March 8: With the increasing demand for thirst leads to increasing demands for bottled water. But today it costs a lot which is higher than manufacturing prize. Taking note of the inflated prices, India is all set to cut down on the inflated prices of bottled water at airports, malls and cinemas.Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan took to social media, Twitter, on Tuesday to announce that mineral water bottles could be sold at a uniform price in India. Seeking explanation from companies selling mineral water bottles with different MRPs, the minister said that the price of the water bottles should be same at hotels, airports as well as malls. “Mineral water bottle will be available at the same rate at airports, hotels and malls,” he added.
The packaged drinking water is sold at rates 10-20 percent higher at these places, while in some cases, MRP is not even written on the water bottle and "soft drinks like Coca-Cola are sold in loose, at an increased rate", Paswan had said. Charging above the MRP is a violation of the law. But we still see at airports, multiplex and hotels that packaged water is sold at a price higher than the MRP. This needs to be stopped, he added.
“We received several complaints that companies file separate print rates. The ministry has asked them for a response,” Paswan tweeted. Those who break the new law could be fined up to 100,000 rupees or face one year in prison.
