Mumbai, March 8: The Shiv Sena's Vishwanath Mahadeshwar has been elected as the new Mumbai mayor. The BJP corporators extended their support to Mahadeshwar during the mayoral poll to the BMC on Wednesday. Mahadeshwar defeated Congress nominee Vithal Lokare, considering that the party won only 31 out of the 227 seats in the BMC elections. Mahadeshwar, 56, is a three-time municipal corporators from Bandra. This development came after Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced earlier on March 4 that the BJP would not contest the March 8 Mayoral polls. The BJP and the Shiv Sena bagged 82 and 84 seats respectively in the recently held BMC election.
Maharashtra Chief Minister had on March 4 said that the BJP is ready to support the Shiv Sena but would not take any post including that of deputy mayor, leader of opposition or chairmanship of any committee in the BMC.
