Bhubaneswar, March 9: On Wednesday International Women’s Day was celebrated with high spirit everywhere. On the eve of the same occasion 24*7 toll-free helpline was launched to provide medical and legal counselling to women victims.Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated free helpline initiative which aims to help distressed women. In order to deal with the violence faced by women in day-to-day life, Odisha government stepped forward to help women by launching 24*7 toll-free helpline service at a function organised by the Women and Child Development Department.
Speaking on the occasion Naveen Patnaik said, "Odisha government has instituted 50% reservation for women in Panchayati Raj Institutions and government jobs to encourage their better participation. Women in Odisha got back their confidence to march ahead in society and overcome blind beliefs, illiteracy, disease and discrimination. The helpline will create help women in taking benefits of various schemes and programmes of the state government for the welfare of women," he added.
This 24*7 toll-free helpline will help women to aid them with legal and medical support. All calls on this number will land at the District Women and Child Cell where at least one constable will be present round the clock. As per NCRB 2015 statistics, Odisha is ranked fifth in the country in terms of the number of rape cases.
