Varanasi, March 9: Former Australian captain and one of the best Batsmen over his time Steve Waugh on Tuesday visited the Ganga ghat in Varanasi to perform the last rites of his friend Stephen. In order to fulfill Stephen's last wish, Waugh reached the Manikarnika ghat and immersed his ashes in the holy Ganga.
Stephen, Steve Waugh’s friend had expired four months ago due to illness. Steve was accompanied by his another friend Johnson. Steve reached Varanasi after which he hired a guide and directly reached the Dshashwmed ghat. From there he took a boat and reached Manikarnika ghat. At Manikarnika ghat, he immersed the ashes of his friend and then captured various sequences of the ghat on his camera.
The former Australian captain spent a good amount of time at the ghat before returning. While talking to media on the occasion, the former Australian captain revealed that he had met Stephen a few years back in Australia. Stephen was closely associated with ISKCON (International Society Of Krishna Consciousness) and he prayed lord Krishna and had wished that his ashes be immersed in the Ganga in Varanasi.
He said, “Stephen was my very loving friend. His last wish was that after his death, his mortal remains to be immersed here.” That is why he was in Varanasi. However, sources in Varanasi say that the last rites were for Steve's friend Stephen, some Australian and other media reports say that it was for Brian Rudd, a shoe shiner from Sydney.
When Steve was asked about which team is good according to his point of view, he said whichever team wins is good. However, after some time, India won the match against Australia.
