Chennai, April 10: As the voters were influenced by distributing money prior the RK Nagar Assembly by-poll which was expected to be held on April 12 in Tamil Nadu was cancelled by the Election Commission. The EC had deployed 256 micro observers, an additional 30 officers, and five observers to scrutinize the situation.Election Commission said that the election to elect a member from the R.K. Nagar constituency to “the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly shall stand rescinded forthwith. Consequently, all actions and steps taken by the Returning Officer of the said 11-Dr.Radhakrishnan Nagar (R.K. Nagar) Assembly Constituency, District Election Officer, Chennai District and all other electoral authorities concerned are hereby declared as null and void.”

The EC has received complaints that parties have been trying to buy voters, or are misrepresenting election symbols. After the complaints were received by EC, it transferred 22 police officials, including Chennai police commissioner S. George and 18 other officers of the revenue department. FEC said that the by-poll will be held in due course when the vitiating effect created by the distribution of money and gift items to allure the electors gets removed with the passage of time.

Earlier, the Income Tax Investigation searches in properties and offices belonging to Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijayabaskar revealed large sum of money around 89 Crore which were used in distributing for voters in R K Nagar Assembly constituency.

Meanwhile, stories erupted regarding the EVM tampering, Election Commission clarified saying that the accuracy level of electro voting machine can’t be counted as the manufacturer of the EVMs himself cannot manipulate the votes from the machine.
