New Delhi, April 10: Pakistan has allegedly apprehended 42 fishermen and seized around 7 boats, off the Gujarat coast on Sunday. Notably, the incident comes around two weeks after Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) arrested around 100 fishermen and detained their 18 fishing trawlers for allegedly violating its territorial waters.

PMSA has apprehended 42 Indian fishermen and seized seven boats off the Gujarat coast. National Fishworkers' Forum secretary Manish Lodhari said this in Ahemdabad yesterday, that the fishermen along with seven boats were captured by PMSA in two separate incidents from near International Maritime Border Line off Gujarat coast.

He said, while 18 fishermen sailing on three boats were captured Saturday night, 24 more fishermen were captured along with four boats yesterday. The official added that the seized boats belong to Okha and Mangrol. Jatin Desai, general secretary of Pakistan India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy confirmed that PMSA had arrested 42 Indian fishermen.

Every year dozens of Indian and Pakistani fishermen are picked up in the Arabian Sea after straying across maritime borders. They often languish in prison even after serving their sentences, as poor diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries hamper their swift release.

Meanwhile, Pakistan released 219 Indian fishermen as a "goodwill" gesture in January. On March 4, 18 fishermen released from India had reached Karachi.
